Chapter Thirteen

Navy Seahawk, Over Florida

“Believe me, I’ve never told that story before now,” Hale said, slumping as he thought about it. “Never wanted to. Didn’t this time, but you deserve to know.”

“Jesus,” Hawk shook his head, “I always knew you had some kind of story, but… Jesus. Is that really… real?”

Hale’s head popped up, eyes sharp, but Masters cut off anything he had to say with his hands up.

“Not questioning you, I believe every word. I just… don’t want to.”

The fire faded a bit in Hale’s eyes as he nodded, “Yeah. You and me both.”

“You were bound with a seal,” Norton said softly. “An ancient one at that… How the hell did you get free?”

“Who said I did?”

Norton leaned back against the seat, eyes wide, trying to process what he’d just heard.

“That… is an abomination.”

Everyone turned, now looking at Hannah, who was looking like she was ready to tear the chopper they were in apart, with her bare hands.

“Whoa, calm down girl,” Hawk reached out, only for her to smack his hand aside.

“Free will is not to be trifled with,” She snarled, a vibrational energy practically pouring off her as she did. “Taking it and… binding it with magic, no less, is an abomination before the gods and goddesses I worship. Mundane manipulation is distasteful but, ultimately, it doesn’t violate free will… no matter how unpalatable, if you are being threatened, coerced, blackmailed… the final decision rests with you, even if it is an ugly one. This…”

“Calmly,” Norton said softly. “I think we’d all rather keep this machine in the air, and not have the avionics fried because you lost your temper.”

She looked at him sharply, before looking around herself again and seemed startled before she got herself fully under control again.

“I apologize,” she said once that happened. “It will not happen again.”

“We’re still flying, so no problem,” Hawk said, his focus more on Hale. “What do you mean, you didn’t get free?”

“He’s a Djinn,” Norton answered for the man. “Or, I suppose I should say, He’s Djinn.”

“I know his codename,” Hale growled.

“No, not that,” Norton said. “There’s an… a legend in the Communities, of a warrior known only as Djinn.”

The man known as “The Black” looked over at the Djinn, eyes hard, “He’s noted for accomplishing any mission you set him on… but still somehow bringing about the destruction of whoever calls on him. That you?”

“You know a better way to stop assholes from calling on you?” Hale asked wryly before he chuckled softly, “Sometimes it was even fun.”

“Forty-four?” Norton asked.

Hale grimaced, not quite smiling but not quite frowning either.

“That one was ugly. I had to kill a lot of good people before I found a way flip it around.” He said grimly before a nasty smile curled his lips. “Old Heinrich had a look on his face that I will never forget, once I did.”

“How do we break those bindings?” Hawk asked, looking straight at Norton.

The man known as The Black shook his head, “I don’t know. What he’s describing is an ancient compact, it couldn’t even be done by any of the modern community.
